Frequently asked questions
What are the most common questions people ask you about boxing or your club?
Here are some of the most common questions we receive:
- How old do I have to be to start?
- Do you have a beginner's class?
- Do I have to spar?
- Can I join just to have fun and not compete?
- How do we know what class to join?
- Do you offer kickboxing?
We aim to make your first experience welcoming and informative. You can expect a tour of our facilities, an overview of our programs, and a chance to speak with our trainers about your boxing goals. We pride ourselves on being a no intimidation club.
How old do I have to be to start?
We welcome boxers as young as 8 years old. We have given consideration to boxers as young as 6 on an individual basis if they stay focused and not disrupt the practice for the other youth. We ask parents to stay at the gym to supervise their child if they are younger than 8.
Do you have a beginner's class?
Yes. However it is only for youth ages 8- 12 and we do not hold an adult beginner group. Our big main group can accommodate anyone over the age of 12 if they are a beginner or an experienced boxer.
How do I know what class to join?
We start with age and experience, if the boxer is under age 12 we usually assign him/her to the beginner group first. If the boxer is under age 12 but has some experience, they will be asked to advance to the Big Main Group. Other times the coaches will identify a boxer as naturally too advanced or ready to 'graduate' out of the beginner class to the Big Main Group. Competitive team members are by invite only by the head coaches. The only consideration to this policy is if the boxer has come as a competitor from another boxing club.
Do I have to Spar?
Boxing classes are designated contact or non-contact. Our beginner group and are Parkinson's class are both 100% non sparring and minimal contact.
The ladies Class and the Big Main Group have sparring as an option. The competitive team within the Big Main Group is of course mandatory sparring.
ANY PARTICIPANT WHO WISHES TO SPAR WILL NEED TO HAND IN A BOXING CANADA MEDICAL FORM COMPLETED BY THEIR FAMILY PHYSICIAN AND YOUR BOXING CANADA REGISTRATION MUST REFLECT YOU AS A SPARRING MEMBER.
What makes your boxing club different from other gyms or fitness programs?
The Shadowbox Plus stands out because we are "The little boxing club with a lot of heart." We focus on community, personalized training, and fostering a supportive environment for all fitness levels.
Are there any age or fitness level requirements to join your classes?
We welcome individuals of all ages and fitness levels! Our classes are designed to accommodate beginners to advanced boxers. Specific age restrictions may apply to certain programs; please check our "our programs" page or contact us for details.
Do you offer kickboxing classes or any other MMA?
No. We teach boxing. Kickboxing and Mai Tai, Judo, wresting, and all other combat sports are just that, other sports.
ATHLETES WHO TRANSITION FROM OTHER COMBAT SPORTS WILL BE LIMITED IN COMPETITION AND SPARRING WHEN JOINING OUR TEAM.
Does boxing have a season? or is it year round?
Boxing can be a year round sport, but at The Shadowbox we take a summer break from all training to rest our boxers, ourselves and the support team. We go strong Sept to June.
